TERMINOLOGY

DOMESTIC SEX TRAFFICKING

The recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person through force, fraud or coercion, for the purpose of a commercial sex act.

DOMESTIC MINOR SEX TRAFFICKING

Occurs when a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident who has not attained 18 years of age is engaged in a commercial sex act.

COMMERCIAL SEX

the giving or receiving of anything of value (money, drugs, shelter, food, clothes, etc.) to any person in exchange for a sex act.

PIMP/TRAFFICKER

Anyone who receives money or something of value for the sexual exploitation of another person.

 
JOHN/BUYER

A person paying another for sexual gratification, control and or domination. The term “John” comes from the alias often used by customers in order to remain anonymous.

 
THE GAME

The subculture of prostitution. The game functions as a fully formed subculture, complete with established rules, hierarchy, and language. People who do not actively participate in the game are viewed as not understanding how it works nor understanding the people involved in it.

 
FACILITATOR

The support structure for the trafficking industry that enables and protects the criminal enterprise. This support structure may include a wide range of individuals, organizations, businesses and internet sites. Examples of potential facilitators include Hotels, Landlords, Taxi drivers, Airlines, bus, and rail companies, online websites like Craigslist and Backpage etc.

 
TRACK/BLADE OR STROLL

An area of town known for prostitution activity. This can be the area around a group of strip clubs and pornography stores or a particular stretch of street.

 
BRANDING

A tattoo or carving on a victim that indicates ownership by a trafficker/pimp/gang.
